Levitation of Code for Levitation

Levitation of Code for Levitation is an interactive installation created in 2023 and is debuted at my solo exhibition Recursion at MUD Gallery, Shanghai, PRC.

Its origin can be traced back to Aphasia, a class project I did for Professor Patricia Search‘s Visual Poetics class during grad school in 2013. I altered a paragraph of texts into a particle system, in which every character represents a particle that can be affected by an attractor of the same type. The paragraph gradually loses its semantic meaning with all the characters drifting away from their original positions.

The project was shelved until 2020, when I decided to add more features including particles traction within the same word, gravity, manual selection, etc. It was further developed in mid 2023. I integrated interactivity thru Leap Motion and replaced the text content with the project’s source code.

The installation is programmed using Processing.
