520×780 was a collaborative interactive installation about “joy”. We asked 96 participants for permission to take their smiling portraits and created a digital collage for each portrait. Each collage consisted of other original portraits as tiles. The installation was shown as a grid of smiling mouths, which served as entries to corresponding collages. Participants were welcomed to traverse through the mouths and find their own smiling collage, which was built up with others’ joy.

In late 2011, I re-made a 3D version of 520×780 using Processing. Each portrait tile has an offset on Z axis based on its pixel brightness. The source code is available on OpenProcessing. Use “right” key to traverse through all the portraits.
