Staircase

A group of boxes roll along the boundaries of a staircase-shaped vessel that consists of three ascending screens. The underlying generative system is a multi-layered cellular automata running a customized set of rules.

The creation of this piece started in August 2023 for the event fxhash: ACCESS Hong Kong, which was originally planned for November 2023. The event itself was dropped eventually, leading to the unilateral termination with no further follow-up from the organizer. The project was thus shelved.

Its development continued in August 2026, and debuts in a group exhibition curated by Nian Zixuan 念子轩 at Inclusion: Conference on the Bund 外滩大会 in Shanghai. The piece is modified into a triple-screen layout. Two procedurally animated arms are also added for each box for a more humanoid touch.

Staircase is created and programmed using Processing/Java.
